Bad sleeping does not only affect life quality, but also seriously threatens human health. Many think sleep is a banal thing, but considering we spend one third of our life sleeping, that time is well worth our attention. Sleeping is a fundamental biological need, a complex process of collecting vital energy. Already in the 16th century did the famous doctor Paracelsus recognize positive effects of a „good bed“ on human health.

The number of people who have problems with headaches and circulation or suffer from pain in the back and joints , is increasing daily. According to a survey made by the association of swiss rheumatologists, over 50% of the population suffers from back pain. Many of us wake up tired, moody and apathetic. The cause of these problems is the present way of living and also, very often, an inadequate bed and mattress. Choosing an adequate bed system can significantly reduce these symptoms.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BED SYSTEM

The bed system which consists of a mattress, a mattress pad, a pillow and a bed, is the most important part of our home furniture. No other piece of furnitue can affect our health and our life quality as much as a good (or bad) bed system, though we are not actually aware of that. To sleep means to leave all our troubles behind, and immerse ourselves in a world of dreams in which we renew and recover our strength and vitality that was lost during a hard and stressful day.

If the mattress and the mattress pad are inadequate, the spine suffers, the muscles are uptight and the body is not able relax and rest. After a certain amount of time this kind of sleeping will result in unwanted consequences. The spine is the most important part of our body, exposed to bad gravity effects during the whole day. Sleep and rest are necessary breaks for the spine. The role of the mattress is to support the spine in its natural position, so that the musculature could be relaxed, which allows the body to rest and renew its energy. Our spine demands a pad that is capable of supporting our body where needed, and simultaneously loosening wherever necessary. This way our body will be in its proper and natural position during the whole night. Therefore the mattress must not be too soft, nor too firm.

THE REPLACEMENT OF THE MATTRESS AND THE MATTRESS PAD

It is recommended to replace a mattress at least every ten years, because it absorbs large amounts of human sweat and dead skin cells, which slowly damages the mattress and stimulates multiplication of bacteria,maggots and other bilogical agents. As it is important to change the mattress, it is also recommended to replace the mattress pad. A worn out pad cannot support the mattress properly, and will significantly shorten its expiration date. It is necessary to adjust the mattress pad to the mattress, so that its effect might be optimal and its deformation prevented.

IF YOU DO NOT SLEEP WELL YOU SHOULD ESTABLISH SOME NEW RULES IN YOUR DAILY LIFE:

  • Go to sleep and wake up every day approximately at the same time, regardless working and non-working days.
  • Maintain a good relationship with your sleep, everything that might bother it (cellphone, computer, television) shoud be removed from the bedroom.

  • In every second of Your sleep the bed system should provide you with keeping the proper temperature of Your body, and thus create good hygienic conditions, that protect from maggots, bacteria and mould..
  • Also a flexible mattress pad is essential for an anatomically correct body position while sleeping.
